Pediatric urology
Urology is the science of diseases within the genitourinary system of males and females. Anatomically it includes diseases in the upper urinary tract like the kidneys and ureters, the lower urinary bladder and urethra, and the male inner and outer genitals like the prostate, testicles and the epididymis. Urological disorders account for about one third of all surgical admissions to hospitals. Such disorders are common in the community, and though few are life threatening, many may have a profound effect on the quality of life. Pediatric urology, which was pioneered in Britain, encompasses the management of Congential malformation such as hypospadias, bladder exstrophy, posterior urethral valves, and surgery for the urological malignant diseases of infancy and childhood. Diagnosis of urological conditions in utero is now possible, and these need the expertise and opinion of the Pediatric urologist.
